Activities & Lessons for September Events

Here are some ideas on how to celebrate all of the special events in September.

Better Breakfast Month
--Have your students keep a food journal of what they eat for breakfast throughout the week.
--Invite someone from the school cafeteria in to discuss good breakfast eating habits.
--Learn about the food groups.

Cable TV Month
--Students can research the history of cable TV.
--Use the following writing prompt ideas:
1. What do you think life was like without TV?
2. How would our lives be different today without TV?
3. What do you think TV will be like in 20, 50, 100 years?
--Invite a cable or TV professional in to discuss the parts and workings of a TV/the cable system.
--Have students create their own TV program. Record with your school's video camera.

Children's Eye Health and Safety Month
--Be sure to always observe the vision habits of your students.
--Discuss eye health with your school nurse.
--Invite in the school nurse to discuss eye health and safety with your students.

Classical Music Month
--Provide a listening center in your classroom that showcases various classical composers.
--Plan a cross-curricular activity with the music teacher.
--Have students select and research a composer.
--Visit the local symphony.

Library Card Sign-Up Month
--Contact your local public library and learn how to get all of your students library cards.
--Have your students create posters that encourage people to visit the library.
--Ask students to design a library card for your school library.

National Chicken Month
--Write poems that focus on chickens.
--List all of the ways people can use chicken.
--Have this debate: "Which came first...the chicken or the egg?"
--Visit a chicken farm.

National Courtesy Month
--Review basic manners with students.
--Ask students to keep track of any courtesy they take part in during the day.

National Honey Month
--Visit a honey making plant.
--Research the honey bee.
--Have students bring in treats that contain honey.
--Ask students to write a story from a bee's point of view.

National Piano Month
--In conjunction with the music teacher, share several musical pieces on the piano.
--Have students research the history of the piano.

National Rice Month

--Learn how rice is grown and harvested.

National School Success Month
--Have students list ways in which they can help their school be successful.
--Have students list ways in which they believe their school is already successful.
--Have a school "success" day. (Similar to a school pride day.)

National Sewing Month
--Invite a seamstress in to teach the students how to complete a simple sewing project.
--Visit a some type of factory that sews materials.
--Create a class quilt...have each student create their own personal block. You could also ask families to create a block. Ask for a parent volunteer to sew it together.

Read-A-New-Book Month
--Give a booktalk daily. Select a new and fun book to share with your class. Read all or part of the book.
--Challenge students to read books from a variety of genre throughout the month.

Women of Achievement Month
--Have students select a famous woman to research.
--Throughout the month, highlight special women in history or your community.

1st Week - Child Accident Prevention Week
--Encourage families to evaluate their homes for "accidenct prone" areas/situations.
--Invite local fire/police officials in to discuss safety.
--Have students create posters that encourage fellow classmates to be safe.
--Have students author a "safety" book.

3rd Week - National Child Care Week
